When the Bracks Government came to power it inherited a run-down, fragmented public transport system. To rectify the situation, the Bracks Government sat down with Yarra Trams and Connex to negotiate an agreement that would deliver value for money and a better system.
After listening to the community and the service providers – and committing an extra $1 billion to the public transport system over the next four years - the Government has achieved:
- An integrated system, including 5-year contracts with Yarra Trams & Connex;
- An increased focus on customer safety, providing:
- An extra 180 customer service staff on the rail network, bringing the total to over 300;
- 50 extra re-staffed stations, including stations at Ormond, Glenhuntly and Murrumbeena, and the re-opening of toilet facilities at these stations;
- 50 more customer service staff on trams; and
- An additional 200 Safe Travel staff patrolling trains after 9.00 pm.
